Castellers are human tower made at many locations within Catalonia as a part of different traditional festivals. Many of castelleres or teams on these festivals succeed to build the complex tower’s structure. UNESCO declared this as Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity on November 16, 2010.
Google released a Castellers 2006 doodle on October 1st by memorizing castellers efforts. In that doodle the ‘l’ of Google logo is replaced with a casteller. The castellers are having green and white dress, may be castellers of ‘Castellers de Vilafranca’. Castellers de Barcelona team usually wear red shirts. Whatever the doodle is simple one dedicated to castellers. It is first time Google dedicating a Google doodle for castellers.
The most popular teams who have been build complex castellers are from Vilafranca del Penedes, Valls, Terrassa, Tarragona and Mataro. They have been made the complex gamma extra castells. The success of castell is considered when the stages of it’s assembling and disassembling, can be done in complete succession.The formation of castell has 2 important phases. The first phase is pinya, the phase in which base of the Castellers are formed. After forming the base people move to upper layers and move to their respective positions forming higher levels. There is a form of castell called as ’rising’ in which each level is constructed by lifting the castell into the air.
The usual dress code for Castellers is a white trousers, a black sash, a bandana and a colored shirt often bearing the team’s emblem for which they are participating. The different colored shirt distinguish between participants of different team.
Usually Castellers opt a multi – tiered structure and height will be of nine or ten peoples from the ground. The motto of castellers can be expressed in 4 words. They are Strength, balance, courage and common sense.
Castellers are world famous attraction of different festivals all across the world. The origin and tradition of castells are from 18th century. It is originated in southern part of Catalonia in Valls, near the city of Tarragona at the end of 18th century.
Later the tradition of building castellers are followed by many other trasitions of Catalonia. The popularity of this increased since from 1981, when the highest casteller of levels of the 20th century was built. It became popular not only in Catalonia but also even in the Balearic Islands.
