In 1972 the race distance is modified to 3200 meters and is currently used after the adoption of metric system by Australia in 1970. The record generated by Rain Lover’s in 1968 was modified accordingly to 3 min. 17.9sec from 3min. 19.1 sec.

The current record holder in Melbourne horse race is Kingston Rule, the winner of 1990’s winner of Melbourne Cup with a record time 3min 16.3sec. The doodle is simple and it pictured 2 horses participating in the race. 24 horses participated in the Melbourne race 2004. In the race Zazzman comes in third place owned by N. Ryan. The second place was hold by Vinnie Roe owned by Pat Smullen. The winner of Melbourne Cup 2004 was Makybe Diva owned by Glen Boss.By becoming the winner of 2004 Melbourne Cup Makybe Diva become the first participant to win 2 consecutive races. And it becomes the first horse to win two races with different trainers. She was first trained by David Hall. He then moved to Hong Kong and then handover her to the Lee Freedman stables.
After this Makybe Diva again made history by winning Melbourne Cup in 2005 in 3 consecutive times in a row. She had done this before a crowd of 106,479. After the race trainer Lee Freedman said that “Go and find the youngest child on the course, because that’s the only person here who will have a chance of seeing this happen again in their lifetime.”
The prize money was increased in recent years for the Melbourne Cup winners. It was $5,000,000 for the years 2005, 2006, 2007. In the next year prize money was increased to $5,500,000 for 2008 and 2009. In 2010 again the prize is increased to $6,000,000 and in 2011 the prize money was $6,175,000. In previous year 2012 the prize money again increased to $6,200,000. The race conducted in 1985 was won by “What a Nuisance” with prize money of $1 million for the first time. The race is attracting many peoples after each race and is known for both spirit and entertainment.
