Google also take part in this by releasing Earth Day 2004 Google Doodle . Earth day Doodle pictured a landscape which is a reflection of our environment. As in every Earth Day doodle we can see life and nature in this Google doodle too.

Almost 175 countries take part in celebration and all the activities are coordinated globally by Earth Day Network. The idea of this special day is first introduced by John McConnel in 1969 a conference held by UNESCO in San Francisco. He also proposed the date for the celebration and it was on the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere i.e. March 21 in 1979.

In 1970 United States Senator Gaylord Nelson found a date after one month in environmental teach-in that was held for first time on April 22.

Initially the celebration was only concentrated in United States only and it was initiated by an organization launched by Denis Hayes and was the first national organizer of Earth Day. He organized the tech – in event after seeing the oil – spill in Santa Barbara in 1969 and the inspiration from student anti-war movement. Then it turned to be a huge success with the participation of about 20 million people.

Now it is turned in to a global event participating 500 million people in 175 different countries. As time progress the need and popularity of this day increased. Later in 1990 it was organized in 143 countries and it became an international event.

In many countries the whole week is filled with different awareness programs on the occasion of Earth Day. At last all nations unified to be a part of environment protection by organizing this special day.
