Dr. Martin Luther King Day is an official holiday in United States. It’s observed on the third Monday of January. Dr. Martin Luther King was born on 15th January 1929. So the third Monday of January falls on a date near to his birth date.  The day was first observed with all its importance officially in the year 1986.It was declared as an federal holiday in United States.

Google honored him in the year 2003 this great man by the release of  this special doodle. It was on January 19thDr. Martin Luther King Day was observed in this year. As he fought mainly for gaining the civil rights in his life time, Google doodle also included pictures relating to it. Dr. Martin Luther King was an important personality who took the main position in leading the African American Civil Rights Movement.  He was a clergyman and an activist. He took initiatives to many programs for the welfare and recognition of common man. He was the name known to all citizens at his lifetime.

Dr. Martin Luther King was a man who had his own ideas and theories in the areas he walked in his life time. He had a clear cut view in religious and political affairs. Howard Thurman was the man who had influenced Dr. Martin Luther King a lot. Howard was a friend of Dr. Martin Luther King’s father. Dr. Martin Luther King was a great personality who was ready to accept the good from others. He was totally influenced by Mahatma Gandhi’s thoughts of nonviolence. He visited Gandhi’s Birth place in the year 1959. He adopted Gandhi’s method of nonviolence in struggle for civil rights in America.

We can see his willpower and self-confidence from his speech where he publically told about his thought on staying alone without supporting any political party. Montgomery Bus Boycott, SCLC, Albany Movement, Birmingham Campaign are some of the important events and movements which was initiated by this great man Dr. Martin Luther King.

Dr. Martin Luther King had achieved many awards and prizes for his sincere efforts that he undertook for the welfare of human beings in his life time and also after his death. The most prominent among them was the Nobel Prize for peace in the year 1964, Presidential medal for freedom and congregational gold medal. Many streets and roads were renamed to his name to honor him after his death. He was assassinated in the year 1968 on April 4th.

He had written five books and numerous articles in his life time. His quotes are leading light for humanity to survive in difficult situation. He wrote what he realized from his life. One of his quote says ‘only light can drive out darkness and love can drive out hate’ .Yes, it is what he proved through his life.
