Bloomsday or James Joyce Day is celebrated on 16 June in Dublin and elsewhere as a commemoration of Irish writer James Joyce. It is escpecially celebrated as a part of the events of his novel Ulysses on June 16, 1904.
The date was choosen by the James Joyce as it is the first day in which he gone to an outing for first time with his wife-to-be, Nora Barnacle. They are gone for walking on to the Dublin suburb of Ringsend. Blooms Day is usually used in Irish and some purist publications call the Blooms Day as La Bloom.
Blooms Day was first celebrated by the novelist Brian O’Nolan and John Ryan (artist, critic, publican and founder of Envoy magazine) in 1954. It is celebrated as a part of commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the events in novel. The celebration was a daylong pilgrimage along the Ulysses route. There are variety of events are organized during Bloomsday. These events are usually organized by the James in North Great George’s Street. The celebrations includes wide variety of cultural events like such as Ulysses readings and dramatisations, pub crawls and other events.During the celebrations some people wear Edwardian costume and follow the path of Bloom’s route around Dublin via landmarks such as Davy Byrne’s pub. The extreme devotees will perform the hold marathon readings of the entire novel, which will last for at least36 hours.
In Dublin (especially in ReJoyce) Bloomsday is celebrated as a five-month-long festival five-month-long festival. The celebrations take place between 1 April and 31 August 2004. In 2004 there was a specialty for Bloomsday celebrations as it is the 100th Anniversary of the fictional events described in the book. On this special occasion around 10,000 people were treated with a full Irish breakfast on O’Connell Street. The treat contained several tasty dishes like black and white puddings, sausages, rashers, toast, beans etc…
The doodle released by the doodler is different and simple. The Bloomsday 2004 Google doodle contains the book and unique figure of the Irish writer James Joyce. In each year hundreds of Dublin’s will dressed up as the characters. The performers will be the ones who will show interest to be a part of the celebration as to become one with the text.
The Bloomsday is also celebrated in various countries like Hungary, United States, Italy, Australia, Czech Republic and United Kingdom etc…. Hungury is assumed as the birth place of Leopold Bloom’s father. The Rosenbach Museum & Library that is situated in Philadelphia, United States. The special occasion is celebrated in Unite States with readings, Irish music, and traditional Irish cuisine.
